He and two other members of Shackleton's expedition in 1907 produced the first book ever written, printed, illustrated, und bound in the Antarctic. It was called "Aurora Australis."

When Shackleton was planning lita: Nimrod expedition he was presented

with a complete printing outfit, In- cluding a supply of paper.

None of the party, however, knew

how to use the unusual gift. They decided to learn.

While Joyce and another man at- tended printing works to learn the

art of type-setting and making-up a page, a iliird member of the printers': section" was taught the mysteries of etching and lithography.

Captain Joyce, who was 65, served with Scott from 1001 to 1904, with Shackleton from 1907 to 1900, and! won fame in 1914-17 with the ex- pedition which aid depots for Shar- kleton.
