POSSIBLE

BRITISH GOVERNMENT MUST CONTEMPLATE LIKELIHOOD OF HOSTILE ROME ACTION

LONDON, June 2 (British Wireless).-Reports continue to reach London of manifestations in Italy of a belligerent tendency in a sense hostile to the Allies.

Unwelcome Situation

For some time now, official quarters here have not felt able to deny that Italy's early entry into the war on the side of Germany must be considered possible.

It is, however, a very unusual and unwelcome situation that the British Government, which is not conscious that any difference between itself and the Government of Italy is incapable of solution by discussion, Įshould nevertheless have to contemplate the likelihood of hostile action by that country.

Capable of Settlement

The Anglo-Italian Agreement freely negotiated in 1936 is standing proof that the relations and interests of the two countries in the Mediterranean and East Africa are capable of mutually-satisfactory regulation without recourse to war.

The Italian Government has had good reason to know for a long time past the readiness of both the British and French Governments to discuss all legitimate Italian aspirations, but it has shown no desire to enter into conversations.

PARIS, June 2, (UP)-Three the waves of Nazi bombers again swept down the Rhone Valley to the Mediterranean to-day in what official French statements. said was a display by Hitler to speed Italy's entry into the war.

Simultaneously, German and French siege guns along the Maginot_and_Siegfried Lines opened up violent bombardments across the 12-mile stretch of No Man's Land at three points in the Saar and Moselle sectors.

The Nazi bombers, which followed Saturday's attacks on Lyons and around Marsellles, dropped bombs

After the recent visit of the Master of the Rolls to Rome, it was confidently, believed from the British side, that an agreement had been reached.. But this was subsequently repudiated from the Italian side.
