News Of World' Tournament Won And £10,000 For Red Cross: British Players Ranked
(By "Birdie").
IT WAS ONLY LAST WEEK that I made mention of the scarcity of golf news from Home, yet within the short space of seven days three items of interest have reached us—a description of Henry Cotton's vic- tory over Alfred Padgham in the "Nows of the World" £1,250 Tourna- ment, news that Cotton has reached the £10,000 mark in his collections for the British Red Cross Fund, and the rankings of the British players for 1939.
Cotton's double success was achieved on consecutive days. The "News of the World" final was played on the Royal Mid-Surrey course on May 3, and his charity match the following day at Knowle (Bristol).

In the Tournament final, Cotton showed his match playing nerve by beating Padgham on the 37th hole, and Padham (first round).- more than a thousand spectators gave vent to rising ex- citement during the second round when the players were matching stroke with stroke and halving holes in birdie Cotton (second round) figures.

It was, however, only through the generosity of Mr. Ted Smith, a local sportsman, that this figure was reached. He gave £300 personally in order that Bristol might have the honour of making the sum one of five figures.
