Why Britain Fails To

Beat Diphteria

"OF all failures in our national health policy the most unforgivable is our inability to bring down the high in- cidence of diphtheria in children.”

This criticism is expressed in the leading article of the current issue of "The Lancet.".

"We have known for years," continues the writer, "that mere hospitalisation of cases cannot control diphtheria, that healthy carriers abound, and that it is never possible to detect more than a small proportion of the potential sources of infection,

"We know that natural immunity to diphtheria can be stimu lated by artificial means and that if three-quarters of the child' population were so treated diphtheria would disappear from our midat, with an annual saving of over 3,000 lives in England and Wales alone.
