WEEK-END PARTY

Quizzed at a cocktail party

IT was one of those cocktail parties where you couldn't move, couldn't breathe, couldn't hear yourself, speak.

"Everybody shout," seemed to be the motto-go I fed in the hour of boredom by composing a quiz for you out of the snatches of con- versation

HERE quite plainly in the column above you have a fight of steps. And quite plainly you are looking down on them. Well look again. Stare. Suddenly you'll notice that you're looking up at the steps- and that the steps are, apparently, hanging from the ceiling. You don't get it? Easlly their best record (it in't new, but maybe you haven't heard. it) is "The Beer Barrel Polka" (Brunswick). They reroll out the Barrrrelli with all the palety and gusto

Did You Ever Wonder

How a Sponge Holds So Much Water?

By experiment it has been shown that when one end of a very small tube is dipped into water, the water will rise in the tube; and the gnaller the diameter of the tube, the farther the water will rise. The first of such experiments were made with tubes little larger than a hair, and the term "capilary at traction" used to describe this ac- tion is from the Latin capillus, "Boir."

The action of capillarity is based

on a characteristic of water known as surface tension, Water acts as though there were

an invisible, clastic film or skin over its sur- face, exerting a tension or pressure on the water. Drops of water are round because the surface tension tends to make the surface as small as possible.

EXCLANATION OF CAPILLARY ACTION

Adhesion makes the water crowl up the sides os in A. Surface tension then roises the center as in "B" This ia repeated as in Cond E. until the weight of the water in the tube equalit the upward pull of surface tensionįj

Surface tension may be over- come by water coming in contact with a substance which has a

ntiraction greater

for the water

the

molecules (ndhealon) than water molecules have for one an ether (cohesion). Water adheres readily to clean glass; and we may notice that the surface of the water In a tumbler slopes up sharply at the junction of the water and the glass,

When the end of a small glass water, the tube is dipped into water tends to slope up where it touches the glass, both inside and outside the tube.

diameter the of the tube is very small, the curve or slope tends to extend to the

the sur- centre of the tube.. But face tension of the water tries to Batten the course, lifting the con- tre and allowing the water creep up farther in the tube. This creeping continues until the weight of the water lifted equals the up- ward pull due to surface tension; and the smaller the tube, the higher the water will go.
