FILM: "Gulliver's Travels”.
STARS: Fielacher's cartooms. VERDICT: Jolly good fun
"Gulliver's Travels" opens on Saturday at the Queen's and Alhambra. It will be enjoyed by nearly everybody; but when you go to see this second full- length colour cartoon, a marvel of fancy, ingenui-
ty and patience, you should put "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'as far as possible out of your minds.
Fleischer, "Pop Eye" and "Betty Boop" works in a different mood from Disney. His effects arë broader and his extrava- gances have not the same de- licacy. He deals in panto- mime characters. Personal reaction must decide which are the virtues and which the weaknesses,

Whatever your view, this picture is a gorgeously elever achievement.
The basis of the story is that part of Dean Swift's tale which deals with Lemuel Gulliver's ex periences among the tiny people in Lilliput. It happens that Gab- by, the town-erier who is not quite a Dopey, but whose appeal is somewhat similar, is an inven- tion of the cartoonist, but in the main the ideas are those origin. ated by Dean Swift.
The fun begins when Gabby stumbles upon the sleeping Gullf ver, lying on the beach after his struggle ashore from the wreck.
There is a convincing strength and springiness in the figure of Gulliver and the prince and prin- cess appear to have been made deliberately doll-ilke.
Tho musical background is pleasant. "It's a Happy Happy Day" is one of the Jingles which will dwell in the memory.

THIS well-known mystery subject has been brought back to the screen as a vehicle for the Ritz Brothers in the capa- city of detectives.
It is a mixture of "thriller" mys- tery and crazy fooling.
The mixture is successful and should provide good entertain- "ment,
The Ritz Brothers are excellent .as usual. Special mention must be made of Patsy Kelly's performance 45 0 terrified maidservant. She comes across with occasional good sardonle lines.
FILM: "First Love". STAR: Deanna Durbin. VERDICT: Good Deanna Enter-
tainment.
A romantic comedy-dramu. The film deals with the ad- ventures of a neglected young orphan girl who, with the help of the servants, attends a ball given by a wealthy young boy with whom she has her first love affair,

Deanna Durbin is again enchant- ing as the orphan.
"First Love" is delightful enter- tainment.
Mr. Smith portrayed by James Stewart is an idealistic young man. sent to the Senate from his state in the belief that he will be an easy going supporter of a political ramp.
The am deplets the gradual but rude awakening which awalts those who planned to exploit him.

if you have to churn away at the starter motor every morn- ing before the car can be got under way.
In winter no car should be left for hours In the open. I have heard drivers say that if a car will run all day through rain or snow it should stund any outdoor treatment.
They go further and say they have parked their ears outsite in win- ter for years and have always got them to go. Their motoring costs per mile would be the best answer to this.
one,
The extra hours of darkness take heavy toll of the battery in the winter months. Why Increase these demands by leaving your carn parked with lights for hours at a time?
Make the most of your garage whether it is a private or a public Every aking spent on a night's shelter is more than a shilling saved. And the warmer and more weather-proof the garage, the more trouble and expense will be avoided in the long run.
A root is essential, and at least one end of the garage should be closed to avoid through draughts. These can catise more trouble than

Ice formation on the windscreen can be counteracted by fitting one of the useful defrosting devices now produced by accessory firms.
Meanwhile, if you are caught without one, try raising the off- side hall of the bonnet and keeping it open an inch or so with matchbox or duster so that warm air can flow from the engine on to the windscreen.

The simplest plan is to make one Job of storage Immediately after the final run while the oll in the engine, gearbox and back axle is still warm. This should be drained off and the drain plugs replaced before they are mislaid. Then Jack up the whole air, tak- ing the weight off the tyres and as much as possible off the springs. Solid blocks of wood at the four corners of the chassis frame will give safe support.
While on the job, slip off the wheels and remove the tyres, rid- ding them of all signs of oil and grease, and winding strips of paper around them.
