dropping its bombs on the northern part of the island.

Simultaneously, heavy firing was heard from the direction of Heligoland Bight, and many bombs were seen exploding on Hornum, at the southern point of the island, and on the Hindenburg Dam, which connects Sylt with the mainland.

The detonation of a single bomb was heard at 8.40 p.m., and a few minutes later there was a violent explosion followed by a brilliant flash which lit up the whole island.

WALL OF FIRE ACROSS ISLAND-

The terrific explosion, which broke windows 38 miles away, was followed by a series of smaller explosions, the R.A.F. bomb obviously having hit the Nazi munitions depot.

The gigantic_explosion was followed by a perfect frenzy of anti-aircraft fire, tracer projectiles of all colours lighting up the sky.

"It was as if a wall of fire had broken out right across the island,” said the Correspondent.

DRAMATIC BROADCAST

Members of the House of Commons were electrified when the Air Minister, Sir Kingsley Wood, rose to make an announcement.

He told the House that brief radio messages had been received from one of the leading
