WITH the Allied contraband control steadily tightening on all their seaward trade routes, the masters of Nazi Germany have found yet another way of trying to get vital war supplies from the Balkans without paying for them.

German financial experts have been sent to Belgrade to claim from the Jugo-Slays payment of three loans by the Kaiser Germany to Bosnia and Serbia before the last war--before, in fact, there was even a Jugo-Slavia. -

The German share of two of the loans made to Serbia totals fifty million gold francs. Jugo-Slavia has been compelled to admit her liability on these.

The third, totalling 300,000,000 gold crowns, was made to Bosnia, and this is being bitterly disputed by both sides.

The Jugo-Slavia say that this loan was made by the then Austrians and Germans finance new railways in between 1896 and 1902 to Bosnia.

A well-known Hongkong Chinese couple were recently united when the wedding took place at the Registry Ollee of Miss Lam Suk-ching

and Mr. Lau Cho-hee, pic- tured above after the cere- mony.

Six Survivors From Wrecked Air-Liner

A SMALL Maltese sailing boat rescued six survivors of a British airliner lost in the sea near Sicily after leaving Alexandria.

Three were British officers and three were members of the crew, one of whom is badly injured and is in hospital at Malta, where they were all landed by another Maltese vessel.

Three passengers and two of the crew are missing.

The names of the rescued are:

FLT. STEWARD ERNEST W. SMITH, 25,-of-Romford, Essex, who is slightly injured. Wing Comdr. Dawson is the first officer who, having begun his carcer as a boy apprentice, passed through the RAF. Staff College, in 1920 he took part in the Cairo to Cope fight,

Cable To Father

Lt. Ashton's father, Mr. William Ashton, of Leatherhead, said: "I had a telegram from my son to say that he would be home. This afterntion I had a cable from him to say that he had been let off with a few bruises.*"

The

missing passengers are not yet known and they may have been picked up by other ships.

The two members of the crew still not accounted for are:

First Officer J. W. F. Beach, 23, of Coulsdon, Surrey; and Radio Officer Gordon R. Brent- nall, 31, Staffordshire.

It was offcially stated that all the mails on board have been lost.

Distress Signals

The captain of the Maltese steamer St. George, related that he sighted Maltese Sailing boat flying a distress. signal about 15 miles NE. of Cape, Murro del Porco, Sielly.

When contact was made with the sailing boat the captain said he did is utmost to get close to the plane he had sighted in the water, but the wind was unfavourable, and it was only after great efforts that he

Had the sailing boat been able to approach quicker all might have been rescued, according to the captain of the St. George. Survivors praise Capt. Fair's skill manoeuvring the plane to bring names of the other three it close to the salling" bont.

Attack By Pirates

Shanghai, Feb, 10. The Jardine Matheson steamer Hanwo is reported to have been at- tacked by pirates this morning off Fushan, in the Yangtse estuary.

A nerce gun battle is sold to have taken place between the pirates and the Russian guards. One pirate was killed and another arrested. There were no casualties among the crew.

The report stated that although the pirates succeeded In boarding the ship, they were beaten back by the ship's company.

But later Bosnia was annexed by Austria, and when it was incorporated in Jugo-Slavia in 1918 the value of the Bosinian railways was deducted from the war reparations which were due to Jugo-Slavia.

There the matter rests to-night.

But behind these financial nego- tiations one fact stands out clearly -Nazi Germany is growing des- perate.

The Balkans are the only gap in the contraband control.

The Germans have made it clear they do not want payment of these old debts in gold, but in precious mineral ures, which abound in Jugo- Slavia. And this is where the Allied contraband control is tightening..

The greatest attraction for the Germans is the copper mine at Bor, near the Rumanlar, border, the largest copper mine in Europe. It is owned, yields 80,000 Lons of unrefined copper a year, estimated to be worth £2,000,000. Before the war ucarly 8,000 tons of copper went to Germany yearly. Another vital

reason for the economic war now being waged in mines at Trepen, in South the Balkans is the great lead and Serbia. This mine is British owned, employs about 18,000 workers, and an annual production worth

Before the war two-fifths of the mine's output went to Germany. When war broke out the German shipments of vital war materials came almost to a complete stop.
