What is the best little dress you ever owned?
Mine is my simple-very simple- black day dress which lets me "play it up" with a gay chiffon scarf, or a large inexpensive, but costly-looking, broach, or my special, rather barbar- our necklace (made, I think, from glided buttons), to say nothing of the conventional, but always right, string
of pearls I affect.
FOUR-IN-ONE
DRESS!
The silhouette has been brought up
to date with to-day's waistline and
slight flare emphasised.
This is the simple dress which chenges little from season to season the "ttle dress" we all dong for but so seldom find.
I'd like to call this a "Five In One" pattern but it's really a four-in-one dress with a choice of two necklines.
One, the heart-like neckline, is illustrated in the full-figure sketch. The other, the simple round or straight-across-the-throat line, is the grandest neckline for your string of beads or brooch or clip,
*
As you see, the frock in the full- figure sketch is the ideal nine-to-six o'clock dress. Add to it the peplum, a sort of frill round the waist (sketch 2), which is simply attached to its belt and hooked on, and you've at once changed it to slightly dressy afternoon frock.
Then we come to sketch 3. Here plastron, an ornamental you have
front, which entirely covers 11:0 heart-shaped or round neck (whim- ever you make), and gives you pu accessory you can play wth
In velvet, in colour contrust, un wool, you'd be using the last word in fabrle partnerships,
It's the kind of accessory you like to add when you feel you can live up to 1. You know what I mean-a'special lunch party a matinee or an after- noon out.
We do want our after-mix-o'clock dresses to have that little "some- thing" which day wear lacks. So our designer has given us the bustle back
sketch 4.
In
In velvet un wool. It would be per- fect. For me, I'll have satin-backed romaine, the duil romaine surface for the dress, and the satin sido for the plastron and bustle-back acces- Bories.
You can
add a costume jewellery nevitince and bracelets, if you like, or finish off the neck and sleeve ends quite simply.
This is an accessory dress with a difference-you yourself make your accessories.
For size thirty-six bust, you can make the foundation frock (that is. the frock without accessories) from 3 yards of
material or 214 -36in. yards of 54in. material. Add half i yard of 30 and an eighth of a yard of 61, respectively, for the peplum, The plastron and bustle require 114 yards of velvet In-all.
So you can 800 how little your
dress need cost.

IN these hard times, when nerves play such a part in our lives, health is of paramount importance. This wartime atmosphere does not tend, to Inake nervous people less nervous. The best thing. is just to feel resigned to the fact that we are in for a rather unpleasant time.
Very few women, however, realise that rast is the best treatment for nerves; is also an old to greater health and beauty. Resi, properly taken and in the proper amount, an essential factor in physical and rental welfare. It is no good driving the body to exercises, when what the nerves and muscles and heart are really crying out for, in rest and an opportunity to recover from labour- induced fatigue.
In this matter as in every other, there is a wrong and a right way. True rest must be complete, but, it must not be too prolonged. Complete rest can only be obtained in bed, and it is here, in limited number of hours, that the sensible woman who is nerve-racked and over-worked should reck Let her go to bed early, and with open window, and complete darkness, sleep until Nature awakens her on the following morning,

Many women leave a couple of inches which they comb, not in ring- effect-perfect for out-of-doors, no frippery to come undone, no wisps to fall forward; perfect for the time being. And it is also perfect for the new hats, which are still quite high off the head. With a lot of hair flopping around your face, your whole head would seem to be falling down the front of your dress.
You can
run your comb through such a coiffure lightly and leave it fluffy, or you can put in a few little curls yourself with n wet comb and a few pins.
