GENERAL ATTACKS "CRANKS” IN DAVENTRY BROADCAST

THAT the I.R.A. is receiving packets of dollars from] the United States and that classes are being held at which men are taught how to make bombs, was disclosed in the Dail recently,

Asking for special powers which would authorise the internment of persons suspected of activities against the State, Mr. Boland, Minister for Justice, said the raid on the magazine fort in Phoe- nix Park should have made everybody realise the neces- sity of the Government possessing such authority.

Sometimes it was said that the IR.A. intended to raid Northern Ireland and times that they intended to bring off a coup in Dublin.

some-

"We cannot say what their inten- tions are," he said, "but we want to get hold of the arins and amuualtion which they have gut and keep these people uniter lock and key."

"Violent Action" Plans

It was within the knowledge of the Government that this body contem plated violent action of some kind which no Government could toletate. Large sums of money had come from Amerle for the LR.A. They had captured packets of American dollars with no labels but an Intima- tion that the money had been sent for the L.R.A.

"We have shrewd idea where it

corning from," he added.

He described how captured doen- ments had disclosed how the IR.A. were holding classes at Drogheda, where men were taught how to make explosives and bombs and detona- tors. Sulphurke seid and chemicals were bundled in secret.

Mr. W. T. Cosgrave, Leader of the Opposition, moved an nincndiment that consideration of the Bill should be adjourned until the Government had introduced a Bill to amend the Constitution.

It was unreasonable, he declared, that people should be deprived of their liberties on mere suspicion.

"Assassination Aim"

Mr. de Valern, replying, said that the Government held that intern- ment was not forbidden by the Con- stitution despite the Court judgment. The illegal organisation were ap- parently prepared to Ust arms against the Sinto and to embroil it with neighbouring States. Such in- dividuals must be brought to book. "I bellove that the ultimate end of the activities of

of these gentlemen must be assassination," Bald Mr. James Dillon, pointing his finger across the House to where Mr. de Valera was seated.:

"God knows how many of us may be the victims of that campaign, but with that fully in mind I say we must face it.!!)

Petting"

Nazi Prisoners

“UNHEALTHY sentimen- tal hysteria" was the term used in a B.B.C. broadcast about British people who sent gifts to German prisoners of

war.

Major-General Sir Ernest Swinton, making his weekly "War Commentary," said :-

"I read that gifts are boing showered on the German prisoners of war in this country by anonym- ous British sympathkëTR.

There is no evidence that these prisoners are not being properly fed; so it this is correct, it is a sign of that unhealthy sentimental hysteria whleh seems to prevail amongst some of our people at a time of na- tional strain..

"Namos In Parcels'

"It would be far better if these cranks, censed to pet these prisoners, who, even though merely carrying out orders, are the comrades of the perpetrators, or possibly, the perpe trators, of some of the atrocities being committed by their country-

men.

"It may not be possible to make | 66 the exercise of it illegal. But, in my opinion. It should be made compul- sory for the names and addresses of the senders to be inscribed on their parcels,

"The subsequent publication of these might divert their generosity to n belter objective. Parcels arriving without such Inscription should be handed over to the prisoners' guards,
