HUSBAND'S

TAKING compassion on an elderly woman whose husband had pleaded guilty

to theft, the Marylebone magistrate, Mr. Bernard Campion, K.C., arranged a meal for the old couple in a police court cell.

The

man,

William Joseph | Wieks, aged 60, was remanded for sentence.

Mrs. Wicks, who had travelled 18 miles from Waithain Cross, Herts, to Marylebone Police Court, was con- ducted below to the cells.

Husband and wife greeted each other affectionately, and sat down to and lunch consisting of steak kidney pudding, vegetables and poto-

toes.

Good-bye. Kis

College pudding followed, and a Cut of ten was provided by the Church Army from its refreshment roons near the court.

They ate heartily, and talked freely

personal multers.

At the end the wife kissed her husband a reluctant good-bye and returned home.

An hour later the husband was re- moved to prison.

Wicks had adinitted stealing two typewriters from Caronus, Lid., of and had Osnaburgh-street, N.W.,

asked that a number of other similar cases should be taken into considera- tion so that he might start again on

clean sheet.

Detective-sergeant Clack, who dis- closed Wicks' past, asked the magls- trate for a day's remand to give him a chance to clear up all the out- standing cases against the prisoner.

"This Old Chap"

But Wicks begged Mr. Campton to finish off the case at once.

He explained that his wife hnd come from home to see him, and that it was too expensive for her to come again.

"I have pleaded guilty to every- thing." he said, "and I want to get It off my mind."

Mr. Compton said that he would have to remand Wicks, but would; arrange for him to have lunch with his wife.

Turning to Mr. Scarfe, the pro- bation officer, he said, "This old chap has got to be sentenced to-morrow, and his wife has come some distrace, "I think it is a cast where money the poor might be provided. from box, so that they can have lunch. together."

He Fought Four

Nazi Planes

HERE L a story of humour and calm courage.

A young B.AF. pilot of a re- connaissance plane was attacked by four Messerschmitts. One Nazi plane was so badly damared by machine-gun fire that it had to

land.

When the aeroplane landed safely the French commander-of the air base reproached the pilot "Why did you not send rudio for help?"

"I beg your pardon, sir," the pilot replied, "I thought that wireless mast bo used only In case of emergency."
