THIS REMARKABLE · PHOTOGRAPH, which was printed in yesterday's Final Edition of the "Telegraph" shows French anti-aircraft shrapnel bursting around a flight of German planes engaged in a reconnaissance flight over France. Although the caption does not say what happened to the German forma- tlan, it is extremely improbable that the Nazi machines would succeed in passing through the astonishing barrage of death shown here.-Domei Photo.

NAZIS PEACE

London.

The reports that the Vati can will support the "pence move" which is alleged to be imminent should be re- ceived with the greatest scepticism. There is no evidence at all that the Vatican considers the time ripe for mediatory action of any sort.

The only peace that could come about if negotiated now would be one that would leave the armed might of Gernfaný intact, it would therefore meant a German victory.

Even if Germany were. willing to concede to Pales and Czechs a rer- tuin measure of independence she would still be the real master of the rountries she has occupied.

A peace based all an apparent compronke between Germon and Allied war aims, therefore, would victory-and also mean a German one that would hold no guarantee hostilities against a resumption of and of further German conquests -Inter-on.---

Fascist Wishes

The vlew laken by the Italian authorities with regard to mediation Is rather different from that taken in the Vatican City. The lending Fascists certainly do not desire a downright German victory. On the other hand, a "settlement" which would leave Poland, Bohemia-Mora- via, and perhaps Austria with even a limited independence might give Italy opportunities of regaining an influence in Eastern and Central Europe.

ENCOURAGING PROPAGANDA

KING TO GIVE BIBLES TO FIGHTING SERVICES

LONDON. Thirty thousand Bibles and New Testaments, cach containing a message from King George VI, are to be pro- duced for the defence services, It was announced recently.

The message from the King states:

"To all serving in my forces by sea or land or in the air and indeed to all my people engaged in the defence of the realm I commend the reading of this book. For centurles the Bible has been a wholesome and strengthening influence in our national life, and It behoves us in these momentous days to turn with renewed faith to this divine source of comfort and inspiration."

The bibles are being printed with covers of three different colours-khaki for the soldiers, light blue for the Air Force, and dark blue for the Navy.
