TORPEDOED BATTLESHIP PROCEEDING TO PORT

LONDON, DEC. 29 (UP).-REFERRING TO THE ADMIRALTY ANNOUNCEMENT THAT A BRITISH BATTLESHIP HAD BEEN DAMAGED BY A GERMAN TORPEDO NAVAL CIRCLES EXPRESSED THE OPINION THAT THE BATTLESHIP WILL NOT NECESSARILY BE OUT OF ACTION FOR A LONG PERIOD.

They point out that the vessels are designed to withstand such an attacks and that multiple compartments and "bulges" make it virtually impossible for one torpedo to sink them. The announcement that only three of the crew were killed is a clue to the extent of the damage. The fact that the Germans first made the announcement is an indication that the submarine escaped, and it is presumed she was obliged to flee after making a single lightning strike.

(Reuter),-

Why Battleship Escaped LONDON, Dec. 29 Speculation has arisen, says a naval correspondent, regarding the slight; damage apparently caused to the battleship which was struck by torpedo.

a

In the last war the larger warships were provided with torpedo nets of steel wire rigged out around the vessel. They were discarded because they were found to be too cumber- some in nction.

Instead,. bulges.were.Introduced and balls into the sides of the ships so that

a torpedo would explode outside the real hull and the damage would reduce the speed of the ship by only one knot.

Efficacy Of Innovation

It is, therefore, assumed, adds the correspondent, that the bulges in warships have proved their efficacy as protection against torpedo, and!

• that the fabric and vital parts of the ship were undamaged,

Since the last war, the devolop- ment of bulges has advanced consi- derably, and it is claimed that

warship with bulges could endure repeated torpedo attacks.

The New Year dawns in the early months of another Great War, a war which we British and our French Al- lies have taken upon our- selves so that the just-and- secure peace of which His Majesty the King spoke.so nobly on Christmas Day may reign in the world.
