FIRST essential of most New Year's Eve parties is fancy dress. For the benefit of anyone who has neglected to make preparations beforehand, here are four original and quite creditable ideas for dressing up. Everything necessary for each costume can be found in the average household.

The handsome Sheikh has his face stained brown (sun-tan make-up or a weak solution of iodine), and a black wool or burnt-cork beard.

His costume is a towelling bath-robe or dressing-gown, sashed with any vivid scarf.

Head-dress is a sheet secured round the head with heavy cord and wrapped round the neck. Another shoot or a blanket or rug makes the cloak.

He wears beach sandals or bedroom slippers on bare feet. A young and slender girl will plan her Bridge Table costumo as illustrated. Owners of less · lovely limbs will prefer a full- length skirt, In the former case a black jumper, in the latter a plain black dress is the basis, and it is sewn with cards, the various salta cut out in felt, and (if available) pierced coins. The apron, a piece of green baize as used for cutlery canteens, la similarly decorated.

Cards are attached to a plain headband for the crown and bridge-markers are hung from the waist.
