It is also believed that they dis- cussed the Tienhin issues with a view to entering into negotiations for a readjustment of relations be- tween Britain and Japan based on "netual conditions à China.“

Many Objections

That there are considerable objec tions to the Japances decision to open the Yangtse, even in the Cabinet itself". Is revealed by the "Kokumin Shimbun."

The paper states that Mr. Naoshi Chara the Home Mister and Mr. T. Kanamitsu the Oversens Minister asked Admiral Nomura to give "full consideration to possible internal re- actions" to such a move.

the proposed reopening of the river, und there is apprehension that this muy undermine a thorough prosecu tion of the China conflict and the con- struction of a "new order in East Asia,"

Chief Criticisms

The "Kokumin Shimbun" stated that

the criticisms levelled at the proposed action are as follows:

CANADA SETS

THE PACE

Overseas Force Welcomed

LONDON, Dec. 20, (Reuter). The arrival of Canadian troops and the latest figures showing the present trade position are the two main topics discussed by the British Press.

The "Times" says that Canadians are more united to-day than they were in 1914, and more uniled over the war than they have been over any issue for years.

The landing of Canadina troops is important not only for the military help thus provided, but also showing Canada's whole-hearted participation in the war.

Striking Proof

The "Manchester Guardian" says that the arrival of the Canadians is a striking proof of Canada's on- thusiasm for the Allied cause and her close co-operation with the British Commonwealth in the war.

The war had hardly begun before an historical debate in the Canadian Parliament showed that Canada was unlied from ocean to occan. The Government found itself faced with an embarrassing rush of recruits for service uverseas.
