IN THE WAR ZONE
By G. WARD PRICE,
"Sunday Dispatch" Speciat Correspondent with the British Army in France
THOUGH the art of cooking has never reached a high level in England. the Briton abroad has shown strong appreciation of Its finer points.
Officers of the British Army in France Bre no exception to this rule. In the area at present. occupied by British troops there are at least two restaurants whose reputation for ex- cellent cooking has sprend with speel,
The difficulty of reaching them has been increased, however, by a Gen- eral Routine Order that forbids the use of motor transport for any but strictly Service purposes.
Only 4 Por Cent.
The cheapness of these provincial French restaurants is as praise- worthy as their quality.
The proprietor of one restaurant assured me that he worked on a pro- it basis of only 4 per cent.
The rank and file are also finding their way among the eating houses in the towns near the official billets.
Parties sent in on duty and special placards displayed outside these smaller restaurants advocating
"Ham
and eggs," "bacon and eggs," "h
chips,"
s." and even "Irish stew. In one town near the front lines. through which
passed there
was a cafe, still open and doing good business, which might have come from the streets of London, offering "hot dogs" for sale.
"DON'T WANT WAR"
U-Boat Officer's Comment
"The German people do not want
war:
I don't want it myself, but i am only carrying out my duty.
This statement was made by a German submarine officer after his ship had torpedoed the British ship Blatrlogie on September 11, accord- ing to Ronald Farrell, 19-years-old cabin boy of the Blairlogle.
Farrell arrived at his home ut Hamilton from New York, where with other survivors of the Blairlogie he had
been
taken by the liner American Shipper.
Farrell, who is a Glasgow Univer- sity student, worked us cabin boy on the Blairlogie during the summer vacation.
After the ship was torpedoed, he aid, the submarine circled round the two ship's bonts.
"An offleer, who looked like a chief mate, asked us if we had any wound- ed of sick on board our boat and if. we hnd food. He inquired from our captain, Mr. D. M'Alpine, whether everything was all right, and stood by until a boat was put into ship- shape, as it had shipped some water. "He gave us two stone bottles of gla and a large carton of cigarettes. I have half-a-packet of those cigarettes still, and I'm keeping them
as a souvenir.
