We can deal with them-

however many U-boats Hitler may build

By A Naval Reporter

HERE is just one statement of Hitler's that I still believe. Very trusting of mu, 10 doubt, but I have yet to find any evidence to show that up to the beginning of July he had broken his undertaking to build only so many U-boata as would give him parity with Britain.

That is to say, he then had, built and-building, 83,000 tons, or.—say, some flity bouts of 750 tons angi cighty of 500 tons or less.

Ave months, when the yards got into orrears through lack of man power os materials,

The 560-ton craft took from ten to eighteen months to build, and the 400-ton from ten to filleen. months,

The German naval command was

badly misled at the start about the speed of production. The first few 500-ton and 400-ton bouts were fed out in five months, and that gave them the iden that the speed could be kept up with mass production of sub- marines.

But it was soon found that..boats bullt at such speed were scamped In workmanship. Some of them were not even watertight, and both time and money were wasted on making them seaworthy. Speed of construc- | tion had to be slowed down.

We have not the same number, kecause much of our total tonnage has gone into bouts of 1.400 tons. Ciermany, up to July, had not started on boats of that size. And anyway.. We may therefore conclude thut we do not need the numbers to carry in a three years' war Germany might on U-bent warfare, nor Are sub- be able to bulld About 230 sub- marines much te for catching submarines, at an average rate of six to inarines.

Now, 130 U-boats seems a colos- sal programme. Allowing for book: completed, there would be about 100 under construction or projected.

During 1914 and 1915 ders were placed for 188 U-boats. During 1916 a further 86 were laid down. The 1017 programme was for 273 boats, and up to June 1918 a Turther 220 were projected

We can get the answer from the actual experience of the last war.

How pain is driven away by Maclean Brand Stomach Powder

Almost every form of stomach trouble is due to excess of neid in the stomach, Sometimes this only pros duces wind, caused by the fermentation of undigested food, or some minor discomfort due to disturbed digestion. But sometimes the acid attacks the delicate stomach lining, causing pain- ful inflammation, perhaps the dreaded ulcer.

Relief is only gained by neutralising the surplus acid, removing its effects and soothing the entire digestive system. That is just what the perfectly balanced alkalis in Macleoḥ Brand Stomach Powder so successfully do. The stomach and intestines are gently cleansed and poison-apreading im purities removed. The acid which is eating into the stomach walls is neutralised, and a protective conting put over the inflamed parts. Finally, natural digestive action la restored..
