SPECIAL TO THE "TELEGRAPH" "

PARIS, OCT. 12 (UP).—PART OF THE BRITISH EXPEDITIONARY FORCE HAS NOW ENTER- ED THE TRENCHES ON THE SAAR FRONT. AN OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE TO THIS EFFECT HAS BEEN ISSUED BY THE FRENCH HIGH COMMAND.

Trench warfare has now commenced. Officially, the fighting on the western front is

described as having emerged from the advance guard phase and to have entered the ""line action" phase, in which the British troops are participating.

The communique states that a withering fire from the Allied trenches repulsed German attacks in the Moselle sector. The Gormans sustained heavy losses.

The communique adds that, after three days of intense patrol fighting, "enemy action has assumed a more generalised charac- ter."
