FACTS

Martin Nicmoeller was born in West Prussia in 1893,

In

the early war years he was a sub-lieutenant in a German battleship. In 1916 he was promoted lieutenant and joined the submarine service. By 1918 he was commanding a U-boat in the Mediterranean.

After the War he left the Navy, married, and settled down to be a farmer. The collapse of the mark ruined him. and he turned to the Church: While studying for ordination he took any work that he could find, and became bank clerk. plateplayer, harvester, rallway clerk. He was ordained in June, 1924. As pastor of a small church in Berlin's fashion- able suburb, Dahlem, he soon became known for his uncom- promising Evangelical views.

As head of the "Emergency Union of Pastors," his out- spoken resistance to the paganism of the, Nazl movement inevitably resulted in clashes with the authorities. His first suspension from office came on January 30, 1934. He has been detained. several times since then. Finally, he was imprisoned on July 1, 1937, for "malicious attacks against the State." He is still held on this charge, without trial." He has four children,
