THERE are two maxims for beauty

that are moro important thon most. They are:-Never forget to cleanse and feed the skin (and by this is meant that soap and water is not enough) and never retouch stale make-up.

It is easy enough to cleanse and nourish the skin at night by patting in a good cream and it soon be comer hoblt, but during the day It is often a temptation to dust on another layer of powder or to ndë more lipstick. This is bad, because your make-up not only looks hard and muddy, but the first stalo layer is forced into the pores so that the skin becomes dry and coarse.

There is really no excuse for do- ing this because the cosmetics which are speciully prepared for people in a hurry are easy to UPO And JO cleverly packed, that you could carry a whole beauty shop about with you and your handbag would never show the buiges. The newest cleansing pads, arranged in a flat, space-sav- ing box, aro saturated with milk of olives, so that they removo every trace of make-up and nourish the akin at the same time. They are also very good for removing lipstick without touching the rest of your make-up.

Another really clever idea is the now non-spill powder box which has u special pourer-a little hole with a removable cork. You take out the cork, inp the box gently on the back, and the powder falls neatly out of the hole,

Curtain Lore

CHOOSE your curtains carefully.

They must harmonise not only with the type of room but also with its furnishing. To-day there is a wide choice.

The modern lightly-patterned lace nets or lace panet curtains are a safe choice with walnut or mahogany. Oak-especially old oak-demands a heavier lace, preferably an ceru one ara deep biscuit tone.

In the modern pastel TOOM generally painted or distempered in off-white-Ince net, with A small floral design is particularly attrac- tive. A room painted in soft pastel pink seen the other day had softly- draped Ince net curtains which toned beautifully with blue cushions, lamp- shades and flowers. In winter the heavy side curtains of faded blue brokade are added.

Be careful not to hang your lace- net curtains the wrong way round. The wrong side that is the side with the weave of the pattern showing in tiny vertical lines from ceiling to floor-should come against the win- dow, with the horizontal patiom] weave from side to side-towards the room.
