THE POSITION on the Western Front is now becom- ing somewhat more clarified.

France is attempting to drive a wedge into the Siegfried Line between Saarbrucken, capital of Saar Province, and Zweibrucken.

In an attempt to relieve

pressure in this area, the REDING

Nazi Army has launched strong, but so far unsuccess- ful, counter-attacks further north-west, with the Maginot Line facing Merzig and Scarlouis as their ob- jective.

ATTACK ON FORTS

Saarbrucken, which covers the Arst line of the Siegfried forti- fications, is menaced by the French drive and, according to some reports, is already aur- rounded and behind the French front lines, which ro now stretching roughly east to west from the Saar River at Ensdorf to a point near Zweibrucken.

The French forces are stated to have penetrated eight miles into German territory east of Saarbrucken

north Ankl Sarreguemines. ATTACKS ON FORTS

trated on Zwelbrucken, an important rallway junction, on Friedrichstal (both on the Blies River) and on Tenirasse. These three centres are Important pivots In the Siegfried Line which, despite the terrifle French pounding, has not yet cracked.

All the German terrain cast of the French town of Forbne is in Allled

hands.

Mie German counter-offensive, which is directed from Merzig (on the Saar River) is directed along the

area bounded by the Luxembourg frontier.
