Pastor Would Not Fight One-Way Corrigan Weds
For Christianity
WHEN he supported a conscientious objector before the South Wales appeals tribunal at Cardiff recently, a pastor said it would be against his conscience to fight even if England were at war against a country whose object was the destruction of Chris tianity.
He was Pastor Frederick A. Poole, of the Apostolic Church. He appeared for Ivor Hugh Baley, of Aberdare, who said he was opposed to all forms of service under the Military Training Act. Refused To Help War Machino
County Court Judge Davies, the chairman, asked Mr. Poole if he agreed with Baley, who had declared his refusal to under- take even civil duties as he believed that by so doing he would help the war machine.
Mr. Poole: Yes, if that meant that by undertaking civil train- ing he would be releasing another man för military service.
Fred Price, steel worker, of Ebbw Vale, said to the tribunal:
"If I sunt someone, in the street I
should be charged with murder. 1
agree to be trained in the use of guns to, shoot people on the battle- flek I should be praised. Is that Christianity?
Judge Davies: Suppose someone tried to kill, you would you try to defend yourself?
"I could not say until the occasion aroce," Price replied.
