The Battle Of Imports And Exports

HOW JAPAN HAS WON

CHINA'S TRADE

CHUNGKING, Aug. 13 (Central).-One-third of China's import trade for the first four months of 1939 was with Japan, according to figures released by the Foreign Trade Commission of the Ministry of Finance. Out of a total value of $397,073,000 in Chinese national currency, imports from Japan (plus Kwantung Leased Territory) amounted to $130,860,000.

The goods came in mainly through 16 coastal and river ports. During the period under survey 11 of them were under Japanese military occupation. They were Shanghai, Tientsin, Chefoo, Kinochow (Tsingtao), Hankow, Kiukiang, Nanking, Hangchow, Amoy, Canton, and Klungchow (Hainan Island). Swatow fell on June 23, leaving at present only four ports, namely Chungking, Foochow, Ningpo and Kowloon.

The United States (plus the Philip-

pine Islands) was a poor second.

Goods and supplies from America Bank Failure had value of $66,300,000, less than
