London magistrate, has become,

a convert to the idea of abolishing capital, punishment for at least an experimental period of five years.

Nine years ago, when a Select Com- .mittee of the House of Commons direttered enpltal punishment, Sir Gervais, a member, said he believed that the case for abolishing the death sentence was "not proven."

He was unwilling to sign the con-- mittee's report, which aivousted on experimental suspension of capital punishment. Now he lng come round- to the committee's viewpoint. In the current issue of the Penal Reformer, the journal of the Howard Lengue for Penal Reform, he states: "Even from the standpoiút of deterrency the death sentence can only be justified It is proved to be both necessary and effective.
