A "Don'tless"
Nursery
MY father was a sen captain and had all the skill lo dotaji, and the ablilty to do things that most sallora have. Ho designed our nursery with such happy results that I fall to TC- member a single "don't" in connee- tion with it. It was our kingdom. to do with as we would,
It was a forge sunny roomi on the third floor. The windows were made safe by guards of heavy wire which bowed outwards. We could Dut Cushlons on the sill and sit there. quite safely. Underneath the win- dows was a broad seat. Its top was cut into four sections and hinged, making four lockers for toys-one for each child. Next to the window was a bookcase with fntry books. tales of adventure, and school stories, As to furniture, there was a carpot on the floor, little chairs, and a sofa on which we could jump without re- pulse. The low nursery table was hot sacred; if wo apllled water- colours on it, or carved at it with a knife, no one scolded. For party occasions, too, it had a most devastat Ing cover as a contrast to the white one at supper time.
The nursery hud also a cupboard of stage properties, and of Infinito possibilities- few anclent hats, In- cluding an opera hat with its fas- cinating Jack-in-the-box effect; old) evening frocks, and discorded and. gorgeous fans and such oddment In fact, a whole bagful of the sort, of thing that a modern mother would send to the church sale of work. Encouraging Artistic Propensitica
But last of all in the nursery were the walls. They were indeed our de- Bght,
remember the colour as a pale yellow or buff, and they must have been painted. Elsewhere in the house, the walls were panelled and had to be left alone, but the nursery walls were our own.
We felt towards them as Andrea
del Sarto towards the walls of the New Jerusalem-one for Raphael, one for Leonardo, one for Miche- langelo, and the fourth for Andrea himself to decorate. Each of youngsters had a wall.
US
With what joy did we paste upon that inviting surface our handsomest creations of brush and scissors! How we drew on it Jeanne d'Arc, leading the armiles of France, so large that we had to climb on chairs to make the horse's head and on a step-ludder for her banner! Then there were domestic scenes such as "ie family going to church"-an impressive pro- cession cut from various fashion magazines and periodicals. When
we tired of looking at our artistic efforts we would have a fine tune washing the wall to begin_again,
Who can wonder that 1 look back on this nursery as a place of supreme delight, and sill consider it the Ideal! children's room. The problem of the ideal nursery is, after áli, a matter of Otting the nursery to the needs of the child, not the child to the nur- sery, and I can think of no respect in which this tolled.

Hair Ornaments HAIR ornaricats of diamonds and
other precious stones set in tor- tcisehelt and platinum frames aro
worn with all the intest evening colf-
fures this season.
They are worn according to the stylo of the hair, among curls low on the nape of the neck, fastening waves away from the ear to keep siray ends arranged neally on the forehead.
These Jewelled hair omaments are made in curious Eastern.and mosaic designs, of tiny baguette diamonds, sapphires, and other gems. Pearis are often introduced into the design, as their soft creamy sheen contrasts well with the brilliance of the other atoncu.
Some of the ornaments are long, narrow diamond bars. These net as a slide for the back hair. Others are 1e jewelled lowers and sprays of leaves, often individually designed to match evening dress or make-up. They look charming worn high in the holr.
One artistic coiffure, specially suit- able for the young girl, has the hair Kently rolled away from the cars into- flat curls round the temples. The back huls is fastened in a bunch at the neck with a long sapphire and diamond clasp.
For very blonde hair in the same style a pearl and sapphire ellp looks most effective set in a broad platinum bar.
The sportswoman often finds hard to become sultably sophisticated in the evening; this may sometimes be partly due to short hair which is difficult to arrange in a sleek colf- fure. Nowadays stroggly ends are concealed by means of an article! bun of hair made of the same colour and texture as the real hair.
This is fixed at the back of the neck by hairpins and a large dia- mond and tortoiseshell. comb. The diamonds are set in a narrow panel along the top of the comb, baguette stones alternating with round-cut. ones to give a chess-board effect.
