A "Don'tless"
Nursery
MY. father was a sen captain and
had all the skilt in detall and the ability to do things thut, most sailors have. He designed our nursery with such happy results that I fall to re- -member. a single "don't" in connec 'tion with it. "It was our kingdom,
to do with as we would.
It was a large sunny room on the third flour. The windows were made safe by guards of heavy wire which bowed outwards. Wo could put cushions on the sill and alt there quite safety. Underneath the win- dows was a broad seat. Its lop whe cut into four sections and hinged, making four lockers for toys-one for each child. Next to the window was bookense with fairy book”. tales of adventure, and school stories. As to furniture, there was a carpet on the floor, little chairs, and a sofa on which we could jump without re- pulse. The low nursery table was hot sacred; if we spilled water- colours on it, or carved at it with a knife, no one scolded. For party occasions, too, it had a most devastat ng cover as o contrast to the white one at supper time.
The nursery had also a cupboard of stage properties, and of infinite. possibilities-n few ancient hats, in- cluding an opern hat will its fns- cinating jack-in-the-box effect: old evening frocks, and discarded and gorgeous fans and such oddnients- in fact, a whole bagful of the worl of thing that a modern mother would send to the church sale of work, Encouraging Artistle Propensities
But last of all in the nursery were the walls. They were indeed our de- light. I remember the colour as a pale yellow or buff, and they must have been painted. Elsewhere in the house the walls were panelled and had to be left alone, but the nursery walls were our own.
We felt towards them as Andrea
del Sarto towards the walls of the New Jerusalem-one for Raphael, one for Leonarde, one for Miche- langelo, and the fourth for Andrea himself to decorate, Each of Us youngsters had a wall.
With what joy did we paste upon that inviting surface our handsomest creations of brusli and scissors! How we drew on it Jeanne d'Arc, lending the armies of France, so large that we had to climb on clintra to make the horse's head and on a step-ladder were for her banner! Then there domestic scenes such as "the family going to church"-an impressive pro- cession cut from various fashion magazines and periodicals. When we tired of looking at our artistle efforts we would have a fine time washing the wall to begin again.
Who can wonder that I look back on this nursery as a place of supreme delight, and stil consider it the ideal children's room. The problem of the ideal nursery is, after all, a matter of Atting the nursery to the needs of the child, not the child to the nur- sery, and I can think of no respect in which this falled.

Hair Ornaments
HAIR ornaments of diamonds and
1 other precious stones set in tor- tolschell and platinum frames are worn with all the latest evening roit- fures this season.
They are worn according to the style of the hair, among curls low on the nape of the neck, fastening waves away from the ear to keep stray ends arranged neatly on the forehead.

Some, of the ornaments are long, narrow diamond bars. These act as a slide for the buck hair. Others are ttle jewelled flowers and sprays of leaves, often, individually designed to match evening dress or make-up. They look charining worn high in the
balt.
One artistic coiffure, specially suit- able for the young girl, has the hale rently rolled away from the cars into flat curls round the temples. The back hair is fastened in a bunch at the neck with a long sapphire and diamond clasp.
For very blonde hair in the same style a pearl and sapphire clip looks most effective set in a broad platinum bar.
The sportswoman often ands It hard to become suitably sophisticated In the evening: this may sometimes be partly due to short hair which is difficult to arrange in a sleek coif- fure. Nowadays struggly ends are concealed by means of an artificla bun of hair made of the same colour and texture as the real hair.
This is fixed at the back of the neck by hairpins and a largo dia- mond and tortoiseshell comb. Tho diamonds are set in a narrow panci along the top of the comb, baguette stones alternating with round-cut ones to give a chess-board cost.
