But if the milk does turn sour, it needn't be a tragedy. There are plenty of grand uses for it.

July 26 1939.7. A "Don'tless” Nursery

MY father was a sen caplain and

MY

had all the skill in detail and the ability to do things that most sailors have. He designed our nursery with such happy results that 1 fail to re- member a single "don't" in connee- tion with it. It was our kingdom. to do with as we would.

It was a large kunny room on the third floor. The windows were inade safe by guards of. heavy wire which bowed outwards. We could. pui cushions on the silt and sit there quite safely. Underneath the win- dows was a broad sent. Its top was cut into four sections and hinged, making four lockers for loys-one for each child. Next to the window was bookcase with falry books. tales of adventure, und school stories. As to furniture, there was a carpet on the floor, little chairs, and a sofa an which we could jump without re- pulse. The low nursery table was not sarred; if we spilled water- colours on it,or carved at it with a knife, no one scolded. For party nvensions, too, it hud a most devuštal- Ing cover as a contrast to the white one at supper thine..

The nursery had also a cupboard of stage properties, und of infinite passibilities- few ancient hats, in- cluding an opera hat with its fan- cinating Jack-in-the-box effect; old evening frocks, and discarded and gorgeous fans and such oddments--- in fact, a whole bagful of the sori of thing that a modern mother would send to the church salo of work. Encouraging Artistle Propensities

But last of all in the nursery were

the walls. They were indeed our de- light. I remember the colour as pale yellow or buff, and they must have been painted. Elsewhere in the house the walls were punclied and had to be left alone, but the nursery walls were our own.

We felt towards them as Andreu

del Sarto towards the walls of the New Jerusalem-one for Raphael, one for Leonardo, one for Miche- langelo, and the fourth for Andrea of us hiniself to decorate. Each youngsters had a wall.

With what Joy did we paste upon that inviting surface our handsomest creations of brush and scissors! How we drew on It Jeanne d'Arc, leading the armies of France, so large that we had to climb on chalra to make the horse's head and on a step-ladder were for her banner! Then there domestic scenes suelt as "the family going to church"-an impressive pro- cession cut from various fashion magazines and periodicals. When we tired of looking at our artistic efforts we would have a fine time washing the wall to begin again,

Who can wander that I look back en this nursery as a place of supreme delight, and still consider it the ideal children's room. The problem of the ideal nursery is, after all, a matter of Aitting the nursery to the needs of the child, not the child to the nur- sery, and I can think of no respect in which this failed.
