Woman Ex-Spy "Ruined

FADAME ANGELE HOORNAET, fifty-four-year-old Belgian war heroine, fifteen times wounded, known to the people of Chelsea as "Sister Angéle," told recently how she had been "ruined by her passion for helping other people."
At West London Police Court she was fined £12 and. ordered to pay ten guineas costs when she pleaded guilty to selling intoxicating liquor without a justices' licence at the Dugout Club, Fulham-Road, S.W.
The Club, of which she was proprietress, was struck off the register and the premises were disqualified for twelve months.
It was said in court that the club opened last November had been run at a loss owing to the big-heartedness of "Sister An- gele."
Mme. Hoornuet, awarded the Croix de Guerre, the Belgian Legion of Honour, and the Order of Leopold for her war services, said: "I am a fool. I've al ways been, sorry for people since the great war, when I saw what mothers and children suffered. I just can't help it.
"My husband was killed in the first year of the war, and I be- came a nurse at the Stevenburg Hospital, Antwerp. It Was bombed and I was wounded.
"Then the Germans came, and I was sent to Germany to nurse Belgian prisonera. I esenped with Spanish papers and reached England.
"I was then sent to Holland to opy on German armoured trains and troop movements, but I was found out and had to fire.
The Belgian, Government. paid.me. n pension, but I commuted it, and gave most of the money to help friends.
"I started the club with the last of my capital. Now that it, too, has failed. I, do not know what the fu- ture holds."
