Oftelals refuse to deny the report, but they say they have absolutely no reason to suppose it is true.

They think it most unlike Here Hitler to plan such details so far ahead.

The report suggested that Iteri Hitler's visit might be preccled by other Nazi leaders, including Fick- Marshal Hermann Goering.

It is also rumoured that Germany is considering abandóning the pric- tice of notifying the Polish authorities before important German personages visit Danzig.

PRINTED WORD AS WEAPON

Reuter Chief On Nazis' Power

LONDON, June 30. THE VALUE of "the printed word" as a weapon h British publicity armament was cm- phasised by Sir Roderick Jones, chairman of "Reuter's", at the Empire Press Union Conference to-day.

Sir Roderick claimed that ilse pro- pagation of printed words was very highly organised, very widespread. most poteul and very enduring in its achievement,

Notwithstanding the success which attended the B.B.C. home and foreign Innguage broadcasts, and the Increas- ing circle of listeners, the speaker said that newspaper circulations to- day soared higher than ever before.

The printed word is read more Ihan it ever has been."

No nation, he continued, can afford tu Ignore or to underrate the press as a means of Informing and influenc- lng people at large.

Enormous Outlay

Sir Roderick proceeded to divell by the on the enormous outlay Totalitarian governments on issuing the printed word.

"This news propaganda can only be held at bay successfully by a British, news service of the highest quality. One such had long existed--the only British agency which penetrates lo the majority of foreign countries and elsewhere.

"But, conducted on strictly com- merelal lines, it can no longer com- pete in volume with the heavily sub- sidised foreign services, Totalitarian or otherwise, which encounters chielly on the continent of Europe and in the Far East,

War Of Words

"Unless some means can be devised for utilising the world-wide organisa- tion of this British service for dis- semination of the volume of news Euflecally large to counter-balance The influence of its subsidised rivals, and for making pvailable to news- pers, not only British news and the British viewpoint, but a British version of international events in supplement of, and in correction of the version given out by others—unless this could be done the country's euse, the cause of the Empire and the British commonwealth of nations. will suffer as far na we are concern- ed in the eyes of the rest of the world."

Sir Roderick said the problem was how to place British news in foreign countries financially in a position to Counteract ils competitors without exposing it to the taint of subsidy and The loss of its reputation for in- dependence.

During the subsequent debate, the speakers endorsed Sir Rodericle Jones' views, and the following resolution was moved by Sir Stanley Iced, M.P., and unanimously passed:

"That this

conference. while recognising the work that is being done by the B.B.C.. and other agencles in the promotion of British pubilety abroad, urges upon the Government the necessity of en- couraging by every means in its power increased - tissimination -- of- British news and of international news of British origin ihrough the existing unofficial channels, to the newspapers of foreign countries as In corrective to the heavily subsidised toreign services now in circulation," -Reuter,

Britain shoukl effect a categorical regulation of her anti-Japanese polley in the intcrest of a settlement of the Tientsin situation arising from the Japanese isolation of the British and French Concessions," the paper says. -Domel.
