TWELVE foreigners, in- luding five German Jews, and 145 Chinese, all refugees from Swatow, arrived in Hongkong by the Norwegian Prominent this morning. Five of the for- eigners were Americans and two British, the number be- three of ing
composed women, three children, and one man. The adults were Swatow missionaries.
In view of their flight the evacuees might have been expected to tell dramatic stories of the capture of
Swatow; actually, they dis- closed that the taking of
Swatow was a mild opera~ tion, involving little danger to themselves or the other townsfolk.

Stories told by the refugees disclosed that the Japanese; offensive began on Wednesday mor ning when five gunboats entered the harbour and shelled the fort. cording to the Prominent's compra- dore, their Brink was very accurate and the Chinese quickly deserted the fort.
After this the gunboats con- tinued firing for several, hours, but, onc Informant stated, fired only blanks, their desire seeming to be to frighten the people without damag- ing the town,
Chinese Burn Buildings
On Wednesday night everything was quiet, but a few fires began to blaze up on shore, indicating that the Chinese were firing their own buildings. Also Chinese began to stream out to the Prominent and the Yingchow, the only foreign commer- port, for protection. clal vessein Soon there were about 100 people on the Prominent.
The fires on shore indicated to the Japanese that the Chinese intended to desert the lawn and gave them confidence. Ships streamed into the harbour at dawn on Thursday and began shelling the town at 6 a their fire being evidently directed ni the fort and the soldiers' lines. About an hour later they landed, one ob-i server putting the limit of the num ber landed as 1,000.

They were scen to make efforts to reassure those stli) an shore and one of their al- tempts to obtain the good feeling of the people was their action in allow- Ing the coelic people to rifle produce which had not yet been transferred from the lighters to the godowns.
At one time 100 coolles were seen busily raiding the lighters.
Obeying the Japanese ultimaturn! that all ships must leave port by 1 p.m. yesterday, the Prominent de- parted at midday, first announcing that she was going to Tiongkong and would take anyone who wished to go. During the morning many who had come aboard, reassured by the treatment of the people by Japanese, went ashore,
