MR. Hau Shih-chang, the Grand Old Man of China, and former President, of the Ro- public, died at his home in the British Concession here yes- terday at the age of 81. He had been ill for a year-United

SHANGHAI, June 6. LIEUT-COLONEL Spear the British Military Attache, and Lieut. Cooper, language officer from the British Em- bassy in Peiping, who are being detained by the Japan- cse military authorities at Kalgan, are both safe and well.

This information is contained in a letter which Colonel Spear sent by Mr. Lamb, the Chinese Secretary of the Embassy and Major Delamain, Brigade-Major at Tientsin, who went to Kalgan to investigate the case.

Mr. Lamb and Major Delamain were not allowed to see the captives, but were given permission to send a letter to which Colonel Speur replied. Mr. Lamb and Major Delamain ate now back in Peiping.

Mr. Paul V. McNutt Earns A Nickname

SHANGHAI, June 6.

MR. Paul V. McNutt, American High Commissioner in the Philippines, is acquiring the nickname of "Off The Record McNutt" as a result of his requests to the press not to report the speeches he is making at Shanghai functions, given in his honour.

The "China Press" this morning headed McNutt's photo- graph, taken as he was speaking at the American University Club luncheon yesterday with "Off The Record."

Mr. McNutt's policy is con- sistent-with--other notables. who have recently arrived in Shanghai, including Mr. Nel- son Johnson the United States Ambassador, who confined his remarks to sheep herding con- ditions in the United States.
