NEW DEFENCE UNITS FOR S. RHODESIA

The Governor, Sir Herbert Stanley, opened recently the first session of the newly elected Parliament. In his speech he announced the re- organisation of the defence forces afler the recent visit of the Inspector- General of African colonial forces.
I had been decided to raise a bat- tery of artillery, an armoured recon- naissance unit, leader training units, engineer units, and further expand the air section.
The War Office agreed to secund specialist officers to asalst the train- ing of the new units for three years. "Deallug" with native affairs, the Governor said natives showed an in- creasing interest in local government. Fillees native councils and 78 native courts had been established to date. The lack of improvement in living conditions of natives in urban areas was disappointing. Further measures were contemplated.
There was a serious shortage of native labour, owing to diminished Immigration of labour from Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland. Ministers were endeavouring to prevent a re-i currence of the shortage by new agreements with the northern ferri- tories,
