SHANGHAI NEWS IN PICTURES

An impressive funeral service and procession was held recently for Chief Detective Inspector Dzau Ping- sen, of the French Municipal Pollco in Shanghai, C. D. I. Dzaa was murdered by gunmen outside his home in the French Concession. Detachments of the French Municipal Police and the. French Forces, both military and haval, took part in the long funeral procession. Upper plelure shows the hearse proceeding along a Concession street, guardent by armed Chinese constables and followed by detachments of police. Lower picture shows some of the officials, who took part in the procession, leading are Deputy Commissioner R. Jobez and Assistant Commissioner F. Leblanc.

Displaying an excellent organization to cope with any emergency the authorities of the two foreign areas In Shanghai mobilized almost all thetr man-power recently to carry out clly-wide searches and guard duty, Barbed wire barricades were thrown across most of the roads on the boundary, of the Settlement and those thoroughfares which were left open, were heavily guarded and everyone passing through was submitted to search. The Fourth Marines, the Scaforth Highlanders, and the East Surreys participated in the guard duty and searches in addition to the Shanghai Municipal Police, members of the Russian detachment of the S.V.C., and 8.M.P. (Specials) in the Settlement, while in the Concession French troops co-operated with the French Police, French Volunteers and French Police Specials in the carrying out of the intensive house-to-house searches and patrolling. A few of the scenes witnessed over the city are shown above. At upper left Fourth Marines are seen on duty at a street Intersection with barbed wire barricades behind them. At right a Chinese woman is being searched by a female searcher.
