STOPPED NEAR HONGKONG

THE 16,688-ton P. & O. liner Ran- pura, en route from Singapore to Hongkong, was held up by a Japanese destroyer four miles south of Waglan Island at 8 o'clock this morning.

Details of the incident are meagre.

It is understood, however, that the Ranpura Yard while eight Navy Depart- ment divers are being down was approaching Waglan Island, preparatory to passing the customary signals with the lighthouse when she was approached by the Japanese vessel. The Japanese hoisted flags calling upon the British liner to stop.

The Squalus is commanded by Lieutenant-Commander Oliver Naquin of Alexandra, Louisiana and is reported to have sunk 12 miles south-east of Portsmouth shortly Labour Amendment before noon to-day.

Fortunately, two British destroyers were in the immediate vicinity, on patrol duty.
