GENERAL FRANCO'S Government recently an nounced that. 45,000 civil marriages celebrated in the Madrid area during the Republican regime cannot be re- cognised as legal.

About 25,000 of these marriages were performed at the front, where the brides were married to their soldier- bridegrooms by the nearest available officer.
