WIFE DIVES AFTER HUSBAND'S SHIP Tries To Swim Out To Liner When She Fails To See Him

"Not A Good Swimmer"

A LONDON WIFE, MRS. SHANNOW, OF LONDON-ROAD, NORBURY, S.W., JUMPED INTO THE THAMES AT TILBURY RECENTLY AND SWAM AFTER A LINER ON WHICH HER HUSBAND WAS EMPLOYED AS A MUSICIAN.

THE SHIP, HIGHLAND CHIEFTAIN, THE ROYAL MAIL LINER, WAS SAILING FOR SOUTH AMERICA." THE LAND- ING STAGE WAS CROWDED WITH PEOPLE WHO HAD COME TO SEE FRIENDS OFF.

According to one of them the woman had been on the dock side and had tried to go on board the ship to see her husband, but had failed.

When the liner had moved about 30 yards from the landing slage, she walked to the end of the stage, clambering under the railings to do so, and, standing on the edge, calmly took off her coat and hat and dived into the Thames.

She started to swim out quite well after the ship, but was soon in difficulties.

One of the landing stage workera, seeing what had happened, throw a lifebelt to her..

She was brought ashore and taken to Tilbury Hospital, where she was stated to be comfortable.

Mrs, Shannow's older son, Mr. Edwin Shannow, said "I was amazed when I heard what had occurred.

"I have not told younger brother and sister what happened-only that mother is not very well and is ro- maining in Tilbury. I will look after them all right in the meantime.

"My father went to join the ship on Friday night and mother went to Tilbury to see him off, as she gener- ally does. They have been married 22 years.

"Mother is not a good swimmer, but I should say she is very highly strung."
