Bench Divided In Cruelty Case

THE roach has a brain and nervous system more primi- tive than, but comparable with, those of the human system, an expert told the Woodstock (Oxon) magistrates recently during the first case of its kind concerning the use of live bait by an angler.

The R.S.P.C.A. had summoned Frederick Margetts, of Oxford Street, Woodstock, alleging that he caused un- necessary suffering to a roach when fishing for pike.

The magistrates were equally divided, and the chairman, Alderman F. T. Whitlock, said as he had no casting vote it was impossible to come to a decision. The clerk told Margetts that the case might be reheard later.
