Davies Greatest |
Artist In Wales But
Tanner Also Consistent
By Clem Lewis
London, Apr, 19. LOOKING back over our international Rugby season the name of Sid Williams, the Aberavon wing, comes first to mind. He was our finest international discovery. We had cause also to be thankful for the unearthing of M. J. Davies, the South African Welshman, who was discovered at Oxford. Taken all round, we should be well off for centres next season.
To me the greatest artist in Welsh, football to-day is Wille Davies, the Swansea and Wales fly-half. Tanner has been quite consistently good, but it Is Davica who has reached the sublime heights. I confess have derived more pleasure watching his beautifully balanced and elusive running than from anyone else.
WORTH OF MANFIELD
It would be futile to recommence the old argument as to whether he or Cliff Jones is the greater player, to admit that but I am prepared Javch
the truer uutside-half, Swansea friends, please note.
It is perhaps a trulsm that Wales; can always And plenty of good for- wards. The one discovery of nole we have made this season is Man- feld, our lock forward. Do you re- member how England
cast
their eyes upon him? 1 am hoping to see Manfield leading the Welsh forwards next season.
Our club gomes on the whole have been somewhat more open and enter-
taining, but it is regrettable that our "Sevens" Journament fell through! Two things in the main accounted for this the lukewarm altitude of the Welsh Unlon and the half-hearted way in which its sponsors the Glonergan County Club--went about their job. When fackled properly it will go with a swing.
KNAPP AND cambrIDGE
The Cardiff seven for the Twicken- hum gumes will probably be: W. Wooller, E. R. Knapp, Gwyn Porter, W. R. Davies behind the three for- wards, L. Spence, Roy Roberts and Selby Davies.
by
Incidently, I wonder whether Cam- pince bridge University will find a for Knapp next season. They were apparently not over Impressed him last year, but we in Wales are beginning to think there are consi- derable possibilities about this ex- Welsh secondary school cap.
We believe we have quite u num- ber of young players who will be in the limelight next season. Person- ally I have great hopes for G. Hale, the young Cardiff centre, and H. M. Baker, a Welsh reserve this year who plays
