From one end the pailent's head pro- trudes, and around the neck is anixed a rubber collar. All is air-tight.

The bed slides in and out of the lung.

The patient lies on it and is pushed into position. The joints are protected by rubber, and after the neck-piece has been clamped into position, the electric pump, which is connected by a flexible rubber tube, commences

its rhythmic motions.

put out his arms. These ore air-light and in no way affect the working of the machine when they are opened.

Though electrically driven, it can also be operated with equal efficiency by hand, if the pump should break down.

The two lungs at the Queen Mary Hospital ure of the same alze, though one large and one small were asked but actually children can be ac-

commodated inside the larger ones, for the only adjusiments necessary are to the rubber coilers, which can be obtained of varying sizes.

Ways of Breathing

There are two ways of breathing. The chest cavity can be enlarged by either the contruction and wisxation of the stomach muscles or by the similar functions of the inter-costl muscles (those connecting the ribs). Health experts vary in their opinions as to which is the better way. The lung assists in both ways.

One of the problems of Hongkong, however, is the question of how long the rubber will last before perishing. At the Queen Mary, they are being stored in air-conditioned rooms, and this will doubtlessly preserve the rubber for a far longer time than if they were subject to the normal rise and fall of temperatures.

Benevolence Criticised Viscount Nuffield's distribution of these lungs hus been criticised by Sir. Frederick Menzles, L.C.C. Medical Oficer of Health, as a wanton waste of private benevolence. Sir Frederick's opinion was that mechanical respira- tors were in the process of being im- proved, and that it was the height of folly to proceed to standardise any one type.

Viscount Numeld's reply was that It

Was

dreadful state of affairs that when children suffering from tafan- tile paralysis might be saved, and in u large percentage of cases cured, whereas without the machines they must die.
