SERVICES DEFEATED BY CIVILIANS One Major Upset

CLOSING MATCH OF THE PRESENT HOCKEY SEASON Winners Thoroughly Deserve Victory

(By "The Pilgrim")

In the last game of the local hockey season, the Civilians defeated the Services by two goals to nil in a fast and close struggle on the Club ground yesterday. The winners scored once in each half.

The initial attacking was done by the Civilians and, after ten minutes' pressure, off a long corner hit, G. it. Fowler received the ball and cracked a perfect centre to G. Slagh who, in the twinkling of an eye, had Alcked the ball pant Osman, This was n nice move and thoroughly deserved) n goal,

The Civilians were back again with

strong attacking but BOMO Osman dashed out on severni ocea slons to make good clearances from Wall and G. Singh. Except for two or three raids modo by the Services attnek, the Civilian halves and for- wards got right into full stride and penned their opponenta in their own half for the remaining 25 minutes.

During this hall, the Civilian inter- mediates played, a fine constructive game. E. Fowler, W. A. Reed and R. J. Reed gave of their best, R. J. Reed, at left halt, was really sound;

Singh worked well together and Iteed, the pivot, was intelligent and never hesitated to shoot at once seldom did he send the ball away to his forwards without a mission.

SECOND HALF

In the last half, the first point of note was Pritam Nath going through, but he was tackled by R. Xavier in time. Again the Services returned to the attack when a shot from Gemmel was cleared into touch by Souza,

Two rapid short corners were forced

when on the edge of the circle. Their wingers. S. A. Fowler and J. Wall, rendered splendid support, Bond and R. Xavier, the backs, were cound. The latter who relieved Guest, was in good form and backed up his partner strongly.

SERVICES' ATTACK FAILS

I attribute the Services defeat to the failure of their attack, where good combination was lacking. The forwards, Gemmel, Pritam Nath and Nerain scented strangely out of gear.

After the dismal weather we had had the past three Saturdays, it was indeed pleasing to see the sky clear up on Saturday and thus allow the Hongkong Lawn Bowls League to get going. Most local bowlers have had their recent practicos on heavy greons, and the "fiory" nature of most grounds last Saturday must have put a number of playors off their stride.

Hou King-shing, at centre-half for the local side, was a tower of strength in the middle of the flold and plied his forwards with many useful passes. Lee Tack-kea and Ng Ki-ching were causing the Macao defence a great deal of worry by their hustling ineties, but for the most part, the visiting defenders proved worthy of the occa- slon.

Alex Airosa, the Macdo pivot, per-1 formed a great deal of useful work, while Lam Sau-lan and Lobato, the backs, were very reliable. In the forward lino, the two players who caught the eye
