COMPLAINT
Calcutta.
The University of Calcutta has mado representations about the six years' breach in the recognition of its medical degrees by the General Counell of Medical Education In Britain,
Owing to dimeulites and disagree- ments about inspection and curricula, the General Council gave up recog- nition of medical degrees obtained in India. After reconsideration recogni- tion was resumed.
For some reason, however, recogni- tion of the University of Calcutta degrees, which was interrupted In 1830, was resumed only with effect from 1936, so that men who qualified In Calcutta between those years are not admissible to the British register. SOUTH RHODESIA

£1,340,000, and asbertos £1,207,000. The total of exports at £11,803,000
was down by 200,000 as compared with 1037, owing to the decline in the American demarkt for chrome.
The Imports at £9,750,000 showed nn increase of nearly £1,200,000 over 1937. The favourable balance of payments on trading account was thus
£2,124,000.
The share of British countries in all imports rose from about 70 per cent, in 1037 to nearly 15 per cent, in 1938. Great Britain, with 24,005,000 worth, supplied 40 per cent. of the imports. SOUTH AFRICA
BILL TO REGULATE THE PRESS

A bill to regulate certain 'uspects of newpaper activity has been draft-
ed by the Prime Minister's depart- ment and will be Introduced by the Government at the Parliamentary session.
Such a bill was foreshadowed at severni United party congresses last year. The Transvaal Congress adopted a resolution asking for logis- Intion "to prohibit the publication of untruths by the Press and the false interpretation to the publie of laws passed by Parliament."

COMMON DEFENCE AGAINST FASCISM

Mr. W. D. Horridge, the former Canadian Minister in Washington. said in an address recently: "Nu single democracy can stand against a world of Fascism. The British Empire cannot. The United States cannot."
He urged effective co-operation between all demoernales of the western hemisphere under the States. leadership of the United Canada, he said, could no longer claim the rights and benefits of de- mocracy and at the same time seck
