Durban Test Not Longest Match Played

They Did Much Better In South Sea Isles Back Around 1890

London.

The unfinished 10-day match between England and South Africa brought the 1938-39 "test" sories to such a whimsical close at Durban has been universally described as the longest cricket game over played. But it isn't. They did much better than that in the South Sea Isles around 1890, when the natives would have regarded a 10-day game as being all over in a flash.

The South Sea Islanders at that time liked their cricket in quantity. And to get it that way they made one or two slight alterations to the rules of England's notional summer Such as ullowing teams to game. consist of 20 players a side, instead of 11.

permitting three batsmen to op- crate simultaneously at each end of the pitch, and allowing meiches to go on for weeks. To keep

things reg- ulur, they used to have four or five umpires at each end, so the bowler must have been confronted by quite a crowd scene every time he sent down a delivery.

CRICKET BOOK

Please do not think that I am drawing on my imagination. Nothing of the sort. I am drawing upon my reference library-upon a most in- teresting book called "Cricket High- ways and Byways," written by that celebrated historian of the game,

F

S. Ashley-Cooper, in the spacious days of 1027 when (except among the old-time Sumoans) cricket, even test cricket, was held to be a game In which time was an integral fac-) tor.

Now my story-or, rather, Mr. Ashley-Cooper's story—is a tale with

moral. For just as there is a strong feeling-in-cricket-eireles to-day-that

"timeless" play is a bad thing, so

LOCAL BASEBALL SEASON STARTS WITH "FRIENDLY"

Union Brewery Noses Out Mindanao

(By "Bingle")

The baseball season opened, at Caroline Hill with a friendly tussle between Union Brewery and U. 5. S. Mindano yesterday when the sailors were nosed out 0 to 5,

Three hurlers were used on the stab by the Brewers, Mudeen Arculli, who started, and Lefty Joe Bowen, who Dave was derricked in favour of Leonard in the last inning. Hal Winglee did duly behind the plate.

The sailors should have won the game hands down. Moundsman Ruel showed some fancy dipsydoes, and had the Brewers eating out of his hand most of the

tantalizing hooks. Big Douglas, the best first baseman to hit these parts, didn't make much of a showing with the willow wand, but distinguished himself by a rollable performance at the initial pack.

Cavanaugh and Big Dougins are the only two veterans who played with the squad last year. Last season's captain, Charlie Morton, will not be In action this summer, owing to a couple of broken fingers.
