Durban Test Not Longest Match Played

They Did Much Better In South Sea Isles Back Around 1890

London.

The unfinished 10-day match between England and South Africa brought the 1938-39 "test" series to such a whimsical close at Durban has boen universally described as the longest cricket game over played. But it isn't. They did much better than that in the South Sea Isles around 1890, when the natives would have regarded a 10-day game as being all over in a flash.

The South Sea Islanders at that time liked their cricket in quantity, And to get it that way they made one or two slight alterations to the rules of England's national summer game. Such

Such as allowing teams to consist of 20 players a side, insiend of 11, permitting three batsmen to op- erate simultaneously at each end of the pitch, and allowing matches to go on for weeks. To keep things reg- ular, they used to have four or fivel umpires at each end, so the bowler must have been confronted by quite

a crowd scene every time he sent down a delivery.

The sallors should have won the gume hands down. Moundsman Ruel showed some fancy dipsydocs, and find the Brewers eating out of his hand most of the time with his tantalizing hooks. Big Douglas, the best first baseman to hit these parts, didn't make much of a showing with the willow wand, but distinguished himself by a rellable performance'ni the initial sack.

Cavanaugh and Big Douglas are the only two veterans who played with the sqund last year. Last season's captain, Charlie Morton, will not be in action this summer, owing to a
