Nursery Calm
NOMETIMES 11, is dimcult in these
trained days to preserve the balanced calm of the nursery atmos- phero; when youthful eyes discern in pictures the horrors of nerkat war- fare, it seems impossible to give our children that carefree. undisturbed period of childhood whichy is their rightful heritage.
It is just in this dcpressed time that we can usefully recall that lovely line, "courage, galely, and the quiel mind," and we should con- sciously strive to gift these to our children,
Most babies are naturally courage- ous and their courage will grow with them. If they are allowed to be in dependent, if they are not fussed over by nervotts parents, whose very fussiness develops, in the youthful mind many nameless fears.
It is not always easy to refrain from nervous excitements, but when We realise what a deterrent and in- eniculable effect it can have on the mental system of the chilid, we should count "ten" before wo net impulsive- ly. Let us see, then, there are no lamperng "nerves" in the nursery.
A Precious Gift
And laughter-galety-what it pre- clous gift to carry in one's heart; inirth. encourage your bubles to
laugh and be gay with them. If you con laugh at yourself, they will learn the value of humour and how to smile at their own follies.
It is perhaps hard to romp and be guy in the nursery when your own heart is worried, but it is wonderful how uplifting childhood's laughter can be natural galety and a light- hearted attitude to life give children the right background healthy growth,

To our family we can ensure also a "quiel mind," a brain untormented by strange, strangling fears of jat- pending happenings, if we htip them to live from day to day, sheltering them deliberately from lymist enu- versations and imaginations,
Whatever our doubts, our depres- sions, it is our first duty to encourage the happy natural development of our children so fur us lies within our power, and if we consciously develop in them "courage, galtty, and the quict mind" we are on the right untii.
