Nursery Calm

NOMETIMES 11, is dimcult in these

trained days to preserve the balanced calm of the nursery atmos- phero; when youthful eyes discern in pictures the horrors of nerkat war- fare, it seems impossible to give our children that carefree. undisturbed period of childhood whichy is their rightful heritage.

It is just in this dcpressed time that we can usefully recall that lovely line, "courage, galely, and the quiel mind," and we should con- sciously strive to gift these to our children,

Most babies are naturally courage- ous and their courage will grow with them. If they are allowed to be in dependent, if they are not fussed over by nervotts parents, whose very fussiness develops, in the youthful mind many nameless fears.

It is not always easy to refrain from nervous excitements, but when We realise what a deterrent and in- eniculable effect it can have on the mental system of the chilid, we should count "ten" before wo net impulsive- ly. Let us see, then, there are no lamperng "nerves" in the nursery.

A Precious Gift

And laughter-galety-what it pre- clous gift to carry in one's heart; inirth. encourage your bubles to

laugh and be gay with them. If you con laugh at yourself, they will learn the value of humour and how to smile at their own follies.

It is perhaps hard to romp and be guy in the nursery when your own heart is worried, but it is wonderful how uplifting childhood's laughter can be natural galety and a light- hearted attitude to life give children the right background healthy growth,

the for

To our family we can ensure also a "quiel mind," a brain untormented by strange, strangling fears of jat- pending happenings, if we htip them to live from day to day, sheltering them deliberately from lymist enu- versations and imaginations,

Whatever our doubts, our depres- sions, it is our first duty to encourage the happy natural development of our children so fur us lies within our power, and if we consciously develop in them "courage, galtty, and the quict mind" we are on the right untii.

But it is the angle that matters to-. day, for no hat is worn quite on the straight.

At the top of the page you will see sketched an easy wearer. It comes down well on the right side and has a most becoming sweep of brim.

But that is only the beginning of the story. Coiffures range right through the history book, from 18th century styles, to Victorian ringlets and the pre-war flapper bow,

That high Edwardian dressing was found to be too ageing for most women to adopt as a permanent style. 90 fashion has swung round to the other extreme and is going to make us lool: in our teens again..

New dressings follow the line of the head closely and there seems to be n tidying up campaign. Maybe those wisps at the back we endured Inst season has made hairdressers deter- mined that their customers should turn a neat head to the world in future.

choose is partly

A question of tho tength of hair you have to play with and partly to do with what kind of hat you favour. For the ringlet style shown in our top sketch you need quite long hair at the back and you must wear a hat tipped for- wards to show it of.

It's a lovely dressing for youthful wearers. In front a wreath of curis gives height and you'll notice that, with the kind of hat we show, the coiffure is quito safe.

At the moment the, råge of America (and it'a rapidly gaining favour here) is tho Perukier dressing. They'vo given it this namo because It's modelled on the way the old Perukiers dressed their hate. In front it has a row of close curls on either side of the centre parting and the back hair is gathered into à black ribbon just as you see in our sketch.

This stylo suits brünettes especially well and you need only a few inches of hair at the back to do it successfully

Women who don't like to be tied to ouc kind of hat, or are conservative in their ideas, will like the third colffure wo show. Here agalu, the hair is awept upwards in front, but roit curls give a soft line round the neck.

Here's how to wear the now chip straw sailor! Tillad well forward to show the tiers of smooth roll curls at the back. Trailing honeysuckle and knots of ribbon are well in keeping with the wild flower fashions of to-day.
