'Foster-Mothers' For Nation's Babies

A VERY special kind of milkbar is boing provided for babies by Queen Charlotte's Hospital, London. By pasteurising, preser- ving and froozing human milk it will ensure the natural feeding of infants whose mothers cannot provide it.

This "Bureau," which was opened ro- cently, has been made possible, through the National Birthday Trust, by Sir Julien Cahn, who has equipped it and is guaranteeing tho expenses for a year,

Similar methods are used in Russia, Ger- many, and the United States, where the Matron of Qucon Charlotte's, Miss E. G. Daro, studied the techniquo on a recent visit, Doctors, backed by statistics, which in the United States show that 144 out of 1,700 artificially fed babies died, compared with 15 out of 9,750 naturally fod, insist that natural feeding is of first importanco.

Mothors who have a surplus of milk after fooding their own babies will be visited in their homes by the Queen Charlotte exparts. Careful medical tests will be made of the mothers and of the milk,

For every ounce of milk which thesa "foster mothers" supply for the benefit of other babies they will be paid 3d. by the Hospital.

These are placed in a pasteurising machine and are kept at a temperature which destroys every risk of germs or contamination.

After being pasteurised, the bottles are then stored in a special refrigerator, where they can be safely kept for a period of 48 hours.

If the dally demand for the milk is less than the supply, it is then placed in these biscult-shaped moulds before being frozen.

The moulds are sandwiched between blocks of carbon dioxide, which freeze the milk' solid at a temperature of 10 deg, below freezing point.
