Sport for the Masses in Soviet Russia

Active Participants Increase: Powerful Backing by Government

11

"Sport in the U.S.S.R. is undoubtedly for the masses,' writes a correspondent with knowledge of the country over a long period of years.

"Its development and present-day significance for all the peoples of the U.S.S.R. can best be judged by the num- ber of active participants. In Tsarist Russia before the Great War there were roughly only 30,000 athletes, most of whom were members of the 'Sokol'the Pan-Slavonic gymnastic organisation, which in spite of the vastness of that country had its weakest national organisation in Russia.

Tonnis Singles Tie For To-day

The semi-final Colony Ten- nis singles championship match between Lee Wai-tong and Tsui Yun-pui will be played at the Hongkong Cricket Club this afternoon, commencing at 4.30. p.m.

The winner will meet Tsui Wai-pui (holder) in the final.

The match was postponed from yesterday when the stand court was not fit for play. As Lee is leaving for Manila with the Hongkong Interport foot- ball team to-night, the tie was arranged for to-day to take the place of the doubles match be- tween the Tsul brothers and Lim Thiam-tet and Stephon Wong.
