LL.D., one of Hongkong's foremost Governors,

and

also one-time Governor of Queensland.

Sir Matthew Nathan, who was

77 years of age, completed a brilliant career in the service of the British Government in 1926. For four years, from 1903 to 1907, he made himself an out- standing administrator of Hong- kong, and tho beneficial effect of his successful governorship is felt in the Colony even to-day.

Son of the late Mr. Joseph Nathan, Sir Matthew entered the army In 1880, when he joined the Royal En- gineers. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1889, was made Major in 1898, and Brevet Lieut- Colonel in 1907,

He was Colonel of the Durban Light Infantry in 1914.

In 1885. he served in Expedition, and he also saw service! In the Lushot Expedition in 1880, when he was awarded a medal with clasp.

From 1893 to 1900 he was Secret- ary to the Colonial Defence Com- -mittee, and in 1808 be administered the Government of Sierra Leone, From 1900 to 1903 he was Governor of the Gold Const.

He came to Hongkong to become chief administrator here until 1007. From Hongkong he was appointed Governor of Natal, an office which he held for two years.

Sir Matthew was then called Home io assume the duties of Secretary to the Post Office from 1909 to 1811, and from 1911 to 1014 he was Chairman and of the Board of Inland Revenue, a member of the Pacific Cuble Board. office was His next Important Under-Secretary to the Lord Licu- tenant of Ireland, which he occupied from 1014 to 1010, and in 1010 he was employed on the London Defences.

GOVERNOR OF QUEENSLAND From 1916 to 1918 he was Steret- ary to the Ministry of Pensions, and then in 1920 he once again assumed gubernatorial duties, when he became Governor of Queensland.

He held this office until 1920, when he retired from active Government service.

From 1922 to 1026 he was Chan- cellor of the Queensland University. In 1027 he became Chairman of the sub-committee on Geophysical Sur- veying,
