COLONY'S DAYLIGHT 'BLACKOUT"

Remarkable Squall Strikes City

HONGKONG experienced a markable "blackout" shortly before 10 o'clock this morning when a sud- den' sub-tropical atorm was preceded by the descent over the Colony of bank of storm-clouds-which, accord- Ing to Royal Observatory officials, must have been

of "iremendous thickness."

Tho Ulek mass of clouds swept down on the Colony from the south cast and within a few minutes the city and Kowloon were virtually in darkness.

In Howloon Tong and along Prince Edward

Road, visibility was reduced i to such an extent that all bus traffic was brought to a standstill. Other motor vehicles proceeded slowly with their headlights switched on.

The suddenness of the "blackout" threw a heavy load on the Hongkong Electric and China Light & Power Company installations at North Point and Hok Un, the load being almost equal to that at night.
