GLORIOUS SUNSHINE MAKES RACING ENJOYABLE

Many Close Finishes At

Easter Meeting Of Tennis Champion Forced To Reveal His Best

The Jockey Club

(By "Captain Foster")

The Hongkong Jockey Club must thank the Weather Clerk for providing punters with glorious sunshine with the result that a big crowd turned up on-both-days-of racing at the Easter meeting held on Saturday and Mon- day, which was without any doubt a great success from all points of view,

Racing was of a very high stan- dard and there were several close finishes which spoke very highly of the distribution of the lead by the handicapper. The Hongham Bay Handicap (second section) for China ponies "3" class over

a mile was unnexed by Galaxy in easy fashion, but the ovent itself was not devold of excitement owing to the fact that the two judges could not keparato Gladiator, owned by Mrs. A. E. DROPS A SET AGAINST H.D. RUMJAHN IN A QUARTER-FINAL MATCH

(By “Abe")"

For one set H. D. Rumjahn dominated the exchanges on the stand court yesterday when he met Taui Wai-pui, the title-holder, in the quarter-finals of the Colony tennis singles championship, and played well enough to walk off with the opening stanza; but the effort was not sustained in the next two sets, and all expectations of an upset fizzled out as the champion slowly but inexorably wore down his oponent.

the

Bringing his wide range of strokes into full play, he drew away in the comparatively final set and won easily. He was in full cry by now, and showed how well he can play when he is on top, breaking down Rumjahn's resistance with a barrage of unreturnable shots.

Probably sensing that his only within a point of making the scores hope of winning was to do so into 5-4 but he let the chance go by. straight sets. before the champion Had he won this ninth game, could find his touch, Rumjahn jump champion's position would have been ed into his very best form in the precarious indeed.
