As the Japanese troops marched in last night, the Chinese rearguard systema- tically set the torch to strategic buildings which had previously been dyna- mited.

Throughout the night the flames licked hungrily at the proud city's buildings.

They spread from street to street.

The Japanese were helpless and watched with chagrin their rich prize turn to ashes before their eyes.

This morning, huge pillars of flame and smoke are visible for miles around. The Japanese report that the entire city is being rapidly gutted.

£30,000,000 FOR FRANCO

The Spanish Nationalist au- thorities are seeking to recover some £30,000,000 gold de- posited in France by the Re- publicans..

This is only an estimate. The exact amount deposited is not known.

The Bank of France holds £20,000,000 in bars. This was deposited by the Bank of Spain in 1931 as security for a loan.

Other large amounts have been deposited at various French banks. It is not yet known how much of this has been spent. The remainder will be credited to the Na- tionalist Government.

Another item is gold and silver seized, by the French Customs at Carbere. It is believed to

amount to £1,500,000.
